VENETIA TWIGG
Actor and Writer

Being an Actor: Auditions, Superman Style: 'Ok, so maybe we actors don’t always have an audition a day, but there will be the occasional rush of casting traffic once every blue moon. My record on the tube is 7 hours in one day, zipping (or traipsing more like) from one corner of the city to the other..'

Being an Actor: Face First: 'Various actors mark down the three traits they most easily read from your professional acting photo. These include industries, attitudes, and family standings, so even something like ‘mother’ becomes a helpful observation.'

Being an Actor: Warm-Ups: So next time you see a performer exercising their tongue on the tube, deep breathing , or even having a light sing of that song they’re just about to hit an audition panel full-pelt with, please forgive us: it is a necessary evil, and one that we have long-since regarded as normality.

Being an Actor: Tits and Teeth: Recently, I attended a workshop with a well-known casting director who had gone down the casting route after a fairly successful career as a character actor. However, just as his character career was blossoming, he had thrown a hissy fit, told his agent that he would only do ‘lead’ roles, as a ‘lead’ actor should, and then hit a big blank wall of nothing.

Theatre review of Gormenghast Titus Groan: 'An outstanding cast must be commended for carefully nurturing these characters into a cohesive circus of idiosyncrasies, all maintaining a sparkle of cartoon but never at the cost of anyone else. On that note, Director Ellie Pitkin has undoubtedly achieved a feat of excellence in her homage to Peake’s novel. This was a brave and wonderful new world for me, and it deserves a great deal of attention.'

Interview with Theatre Award nominee Edward Dick: 'Touring with them [Cheek by Jowl] opened my eyes to the possibilities of theatre in different cultures. I started to learn the craft of directing actors in a space, what it meant for theatre to be visceral, and for acting to cost something emotionally.'

Interview with Theatre Award nominee James Hyland: ' I’ve always loved ‘A Christmas Carol’, having read the novella repeatedly and watched many of its adaptations over the years. It has never ceased to inspire me through the power and conviction of its narrative..'

Interview with TV Award nominee James Strong: 'As a kid I hid in my room watching episodes of Miami Vice on a decrepit black and white portable and knew I wanted to be a part of this. I wanted to tell stories..'

London Art Award nominee Zarina Bhimji: '.. the significant ethical issues have resonance for me. I wanted to register these issues, to mark what has happened; elimination, extermination and erasure. Such a combination of personal and public aspects hold a particular resonance in the state of 21st Century.'

London Book Award nominee Tiffany Murray : '[What are you working on at the moment?] My third novel, Ghost Moth. It’s set in 1955: Dan Dare is King of the Skies, Ruth Ellis has just confessed to murder, and in the grounds of Sugar Hall, young Dieter Sugar meets a nameless boy only he can see.'

London Book Award nominee A D Miller: '.. the bleak vision in Snowdrops isn’t a comprehensive portrait of Moscow, let alone Russia. There are lots of other stories you could tell about that country, including heroic ones: the best and bravest people I’ve ever met have been Russians. This is a first-person vision of Moscow through the eyes and experiences of one louche expat.'

London Dance Award nominee Alexander Whitley: 'I've been particularly inspired by the philosophy I've been reading and studying for the past few years, which … apply to all levels of the creative process and most fundamentally to the examination of the body and the mind, (or the mind in the body!) and how dance seems so well positioned to address these questions.'

London Photography Award nominee Simon Annand: 'Griff Rhys-Jones [did] a magnificent, exuberant performance and I was fascinated by the level of success he achieved, getting every laugh he wanted, time after time. To take photos was one way of meeting him to learn more about how he achieved this. In reality I found a different mood in the dressing which was more reflective, even melancholic.'

London Theatre Award Nomination Nicolas Kent: 'On Kent’s long and distinguished watch, the Tricycle [Theatre] has firmly established itself as the most searching and admirably even-handed political theatre in Britain. … I have learnt more about the world and the way it works at the Trike than at any other theatre.â€

London Dance Award Nomination Rosemary Lee: 'One second, the performer is raptly lost in thought; the next, they’re fixating on some distant horizon, and then coiled up, ear pressed to the ground as if listening for some distant creature or trying to melt into the earth. It’s both gentle and intense, necessarily slight, a little fey, and surprisingly beguiling.'
